The upcoming version of Android called Android O is said to have a dedicated Anti ransomware system built in its core to prevent such attacks. The Android based ransomwares use a particular system level window that blocks out user access to phones, thus Android O deprecates system level windows to prevent such attacks

Symantec had the following recommendations:

  • Keep your software up to date
  • Refrain from downloading apps from unfamiliar sites and only install apps from trusted sources
  • Pay close attention to the permissions requested by apps
  • Install a suitable mobile security app to protect your device and data
  • Make frequent backups of important data.
